Closing the Gap between High School and College | EngageNY
- One of the major weaknesses in students’ writing stems from their limited experience with reading. The Common Core State Standards seek to reverse this by requiring students to respond to grade-appropriate readings and assignments that increase in complexity as students progress through the grade levels.
- In order for students to communicate what they know and what they have learned, they need to use these basic writing skills to organize, develop, and critically discuss what they have read and what they think about it. These are higher-level tasks that need a foundation of writing and reading skills in order to be completed, and it is these critical thinking and reasoning skills that distinguish college-ready students from those who will need developmental writing courses.
